About Us

Overview

The Gender and Development (GAD) committee was created by Peace Corps Washington in the spring of 1992 to address gender issues in the work of Peace Corps Volunteers (PCVs) worldwide.  Peace Corps’ Africa Region’s Strategic Plan for 2006 – 2008 states:

“The Africa Region will continue its involvement in the development and empowering of girls and women, and encourage increased socioeconomic and educational opportunities. Gender and development, girls’ education, women’s economic empowerment, and health education will be emphasized in each programming area.”

In Togo, the GAD committee seeks to provide Volunteers and their Togolese collaborators with a full comprehension of gender issues, and with the ability to integrate gender awareness into every aspect of a Volunteer’s service and Peace Corps Togo programs. Gender awareness is important because gender often defines the roles, rights, and responsibilities of men and women. Every PCV in Togo has a responsibility to consider the implications and needs of both genders in planning and executing activities.
